How ignorance is financially rewarded online

Baltimore Christian Conservative Examiner: Another missing link or another red herring?.

I had to read this article twice just to be sure it wasn’t satire, but apparently people are actually this ignorant. It seems a hard line creationist chimed in his two cents on the recent unveiling of the so called “missing link” (it’s not the missing link, but an interesting addition to our fossil record). Sentences like this make you wonder about the education in the world. The conviction in the statement is hilarious.

Without getting into the creation debate all over again, I just want to say, really 45 million years huh? They had monkeys back then?

Evidently they did, since they’ve just found one. I won’t insult your intelligence by explaining the gaping flaws in this next sentence, just remember that this guy was paid to write this drivel.

If Darwin’s theory was right, we shouldn’t just find one missing link but thousands of fossils for several different links in the transition periods between apes and people and also between thousands of other animals and their evolved animals.

<sarcasm>I guess he’s right…we should be finding thousands of these fossils. They’re surely just lying about the place waiting to be tripped over by granny on her way to the bingo. I suppose not finding so many means that Darwins theory is invalid. The fact that we have never found the fossilised remains of a chimpanzee, an animal we absolutely know exists, doesn’t play on his mind in the slightest. Yup…should definitely be finding thousands of these missing link type creatures… </sarcasm>

The conditions for making fossils are extremely rare, especially for any animal that lived and died in a forest like many of our ancestors did. You know that of course…evidently the man who was paid to write this nonsense doesn’t.

Yes this is a thinly edited UGC website, but I was still intregued as to how examiner.com let this shit go to publish. Then I looked at their payment model:

Examiners are paid based on page views, or the “Gawker-model,” made famous by the blog Gawker.com. The more page views an Examiner generates, the more they are reportedly paid.

Writing inflamatory ignorant creationist bullshit plays perfectly into the hands of the athiest linkorati. The article hit the front page of digg and reddit and probably pulled in plenty of traffic from stumbleupon and other social networks on the back of how stupid the content is. This payment model has to stop, or our internets will be choc a block full of bull crap.
